Rooney in line for bumper United deal
Manchester United hitman Wayne Rooney is set to be offered a £200,000-a-week contract to keep the England man at old Trafford.
Rooney has been in sparkling form this season and his four-goal haul in Saturday’s 4-0 win over Hull took his goal tally for the season to 20 – just three goals short of his best ever total.
Spanish giants Real Madrid are reportedly sniffing around the 24-year-old and after losing Cristiano Ronaldo to the La Liga side in the summer, United are keen to tie down their star man.
Contract negotiations are expected to take place in the next few weeks with Sir Alex Ferguson intent on keeping the forward he signed from Everton for £25million in 2004.
But ensuring Rooney stays with the Premier League champions won’t come cheap for United and chief executive David Gill will have to be prepared to double Rooney’s current £100,000-a-week salary.
United’s crown jewel, who has won the Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, three Premier League titles and the Carling Cup whilst at Old Trafford, is likely to become the highest paid British player in history with Gill keen to wrap up the deal ahead of this summer’s World Cup.
“I can’t see myself leaving. I have two years left on my contract after this year and I’m sure we’ll be negotiating a new deal in the next few months,” said Rooney in November.
