Predictable Laws sack reports surface
Reports that Burnley boss Brian Laws is facing the sack have come as no real surprise, despite the fact he has only been in the job for two months.
Laws took the helm at Turf Moor in January and since then the Clarets have slid into the relegation zone after just one Premier League win under his leadership. The former Sheffield Wednesday boss has said he won’t lose any sleep over the rumours, which have been dismissed by the Lancashire outfit, but if the Clarets go down without so much as a whimper then Laws will find himself under pressure.
Burnley were forced to look for a new manager when Owen Coyle left for Bolton and Laws, somewhat surprisingly, was handed the reins of the newly promoted side.
His credentials looked far from polished – he was axed at Wednesday after a poor run of form which saw the Yorkshire giants slump to 20th position. And the two promotions he won in the lower leagues with Scunthorpe in 1999 and 2005 are a world away from managing in the top flight.
Therefore it’s no great surprise to see Laws and Burnley struggling in 18th spot in the Premier League. Burnley have got one of the smallest squads and the cheapest wage bills in the top flight and it was always going to be a battle to preserve their top-flight status, but Laws has failed to have any real impact with the Clarets and the press vultures have been quick to focus on his struggles.
Speaking about the rumour Laws said: “There’s no foundation to it, whether it’s a ploy to destabilise us I don’t know but we have put the lid on it very firmly.
“It was totally wrong, there was no truth in it whatsoever and the chairman has been very clear about that with a strong message.”
However, Laws has a mountain to climb with the Clarets yet to win away from home as they bid to avoid relegation at the first attempt.
