Referee Attwell needs the boot

It’s time for the Premier League to drop Stuart Attwell off their list of referees. The young man in the middle was back to his blundering best on Monday and it was Wigan that were his victims this time around.

The 27-year-old might have a degree in Sports Science but he could do with a trip to the opticians after sending off Gary Caldwell against Manchester City. Caldwell’s challenge merited a booking and to make matters worse Carlos Tevez, who had lunged in with two feet in the same tackle, was allowed to get away unpunished.

It was game, set and match to City after that as they cruelly exposed the ten men of Wigan, but without the help of Attwell it could have been a different story. Still, the 27-year-old official continues to get big games and is in fact on the FIFA list of officials.

He needs dropping down the leagues and should have been relegated after his gigantic gaffe back in 2008 when he awarded Reading a goal that never was. Watford were left furious after Attwell gave the Royals a goal after the ball went the wrong side of the upright by a yard.

It was an unbelievable mistake and one which should have seen him demoted, but his reward was to get himself on the FIFA list. The refereeing body need to swallow their pride and forget the time and effort they have made in fast-tracking him and ease him into the game at non-league level. He needs taking out of the limelight for his own good and for the good of other young officials looking to follow in his footsteps.
