Argentina primed for World Cup run
Argentina may have struggled to reach the World Cup finals but they look destined to enjoy a successful tournament now they’re there.
Under the leadership of Maradona the South Americans lost six games in qualifying, but their campaign was not dissimilar to their 1985, and they went on to lift the trophy a year later.
It’s 24 years since they triumphed in Mexico and they look a good bet to get to the semi-finals at worst this time around.
Maradona’s men are 11/8 shots to reach the last four and looking at their potential passage through they look good value. Nigeria, South Korea and Greece shouldn’t pose too many problems and a Group B triumph for Argentina looks the obvious outcome.
After that the runners-up in Group A await and it could well be Mexico or France. With Argentina expected to edge past those two it Germany will probably lie in wait in the quarter-finals. The Germans will not be an easy proposition, but with the firepower that Argentina possess I expect them to reach the semis and that would be job done.
Lionel Messi is the obvious threat for Argentina, but With Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero, Angel Di Maria and Gonzalo Higuain in the ranks Maradona will be spoilt for choice in attack.
Argentinean players dominated the Champions League semi-finals and they have plenty of experienced men to help Maradona guide the team to the latter stages of the World Cup.
Walter Samuel is likely to be the rock that holds their challenge together and although they might not reach the final, they should make the last four.
